Different Kinds of Equipment For The Handicapped
There are various types of handicapped equipment for individuals with disabilities. Those with disability often need unique products as well as accessories to make their own everyday life less difficult. Among the best things about the equipment available today is the fact that it enables the handicapped to achieve some independence that many desperately need. Additionally the improvements in this area have resulted in much better safety with regard to disabled individuals. One of the primary pieces of equipment you could purchase for those with disability is a handicap-accessible vehicle.
Usually a handicap-accessible vehicle is going to be a van or minivan, because these autos have enough room for wheelchairs, walkers or any other large pieces of equipment. Also for the wheelchair bound are ramps and lifts. A van customized for the disabled will have a ramp that is easily raised and lowered so those in a wheelchair can more easily and safely enter and exit the vehicle. These vans can be purchased new or used, or you can convert a van you already have to make it handicap-accessible. There are conversion kits available for different makes and models of van and minivan.
Another widely used piece of equipment for the disabled is the wheelchair. There are two different types of wheelchairs – the manual wheelchair and the electric wheelchair. A manual wheelchair is either pushed from behind using the handles or moved by the person in the chair. Electric wheelchairs run on a motor and operate like vehicles. Needless to say an electric wheelchair is a better choice for someone with a long term disability or someone who is unable to use a manual chair. The manual wheelchair is ideal for those who are disabled for the short term due to surgery or injury.
There are many other types of handicapped equipment one can make use of. For example, there are handicap accessible bathrooms. These bathrooms contain larger stalls and toilets that have grab bars on either side for safety and ease of motion. For the bath and shower there are special doors, seats and bars to make things safer and more convenient. Ramps are another kind of equipment, that are now mandatory for any new public structure. And don't forget service animals. The blind often have seeing eye dogs to guide them, and some in wheelchairs have helper monkeys. While animals are not pieces of equipment, they can be very helpful to the handicapped.
