Resources for Handicapped Children
Handicapped children in many cases are some of the most positive as well as determined individuals found anywhere. They will often have fantastic attitudes towards their own disabilities and are much more accepting of themselves compared to numerous disabled adults. One reason behind this is the natural innocence, spirit and resiliency of kids. There are a number of useful resources to help enrich the quality of life these types of unique children enjoy. One area parents must cope with eventually may be the education of the disabled child. There are many options that you should consider. You will find open public schools, private schools, special schools for the handicapped as well as homeschooling.
Before making a decision about how you want to educate your disabled child, speak to their doctor. He or she may have a recommendation. Some children do well in public school, in special education classes. This not only teaches the disabled child to function in the real world, it helps teach altruism and tolerance to the non-disabled students. For these and other reasons many parents do enroll their children in public school. There are even school buses especially for disabled children that have wheelchair ramps and lifts. A private or special school for the disabled may be an option if you feel your child is not suited to public school.
For example, there are schools for the deaf and blind that teach people with these specific disabilities how to communicate and function on their own. Common subjects focused on in these schools include reading Braille, sign language and more. For the blind student these schools may also help them work with seeing eye dogs and even acquire an assistance dog. Dogs (and in some cases even monkeys) can be very helpful for disabled children and adults. These assistance animals can perform all kinds of tasks and provide companionship.
There are support groups for parents of handicapped children, as well as groups where these children can get together and play. There are also support groups for the kids that are conducted by professionals who are specially trained in this area. The Americans with Disabilities Act has a site where you can research more on what kind of help and support is available for children and adults with disabilities. Thanks to this particular government Act, the disabled have many rights such as handicapped parking and wheelchair accessible building entry.
